Good Music

LoveAndMusicAll of true love contains good music. Or, perhaps, all of good music contains true love, although not necessarily of the romantic variety.

What music convinces you of the reality and power of love?

  1. Music has brought me into the heart of love so many times and in so many ways.
Children’s choir and folk choir in the church of my childhood, singing about God’s love with warm, friendly, loving people made me feel the love of God, even as the larger institution of this church was taking a ride in a handbasket.
High school band kept me from being a teen suicide statistic, between the music itself moving me and the camaraderie keeping me grounded.
When I returned to this city after several years away, I chose my church largely for its music program, which has a reputation for excellence. Challenging repertoire and intense focused effort to learn it have been good for me, but being with those people has been even better. I met my best friend at my first rehearsal, and all the music we’ve shared (mix tapes, singing in the car, etc.) bears our love. Though not everyone in the choir believes in God, I feel God’s presence and love when we sing together.

  2. For me music is something we humans could not live without. I think the inspiraton for all music comes from our fundamental relationship to nature, the rustling of leaves, the pounding waves of the ocean as examples. Classical music is my love; there are times when I am completely overwhelmed by the ferocity or tenderness of the composition as well as the interpretation by the musical artist.
