Across the ages we humans have loved to capture our own images, to paint them on walls or vases or canvass, or to preserve our faces on film or digital media. We want to hold the moment, to be able to look back at ourselves and to have those who come after us hold our memories.
What family pictures do you particularly treasure?
Columbus Day is properly celebrated in the United States as a national day of mourning, a day to remember and repent from all the violence against Native Americans that began with Columbus and continued across the centuries. Perhaps we can begin with listening.
Which Native voices inform how you see the world?
Imagine, for a moment, that you have walked through a window in a giant hedge, down a path that surely must lead to a circle where faeries dance, or the fountain of youth, or a glade where the leaves rustle our messages meant only for you. You could go there, you know.
How does your imagination lead you into magic?
They don’t call the Grand Canyon grand for nothing. Simply to gaze across the massive chasm, carved out across the eons, is to remember that each of our lives is very small, each lifespan very short, each disappointment rather negligible in the grand scheme of things.
What helps you to gain perspective on your life?
A patchwork of fields or a patchwork quilt: either way smaller pieces, each with their own kind of beauty, come together to make something even more lovely. Sometimes, though, you need a little distance in time or space to be able to appreciate the pattern.
