“small” has a variety of connotations – it can mean ‘petty’ as well as relative importance or stature. When considering another person, be they less tall, less educated, less prosperous or advantaged, it is vitally important to relate to them with respect – just common decency. Robert Frost’s poem, “The Fear of God”
he phrases it – “wearing for apparel what was meant to be the curtain of the inmost soul.” Any need we have to feel superior at the cost of another’s self respect, to me, means keeping anyone’s worth on an even keel.
