The Beauty of Literature

books-with-owl“That is part of the beauty of all literature. You discover that your longings are universal longings, that you’re not lonely and isolated from anyone. You belong.”
―F. Scott Fitzgerald

  1. As a youth library consultant for a State Library, I reviewed many books for children and young adults as well as associating with librarians in the state who also reviewed materials. A set of three books by Mildred Taylor influenced me to a great degree. Somewhat autobiographical in nature, they depict the life of a young Black girl living in the South when Blacks continued living in precarious situations. Although her grandmother owned land and fiercely held onto it, the young girl had to learn her place in the face of challenges. I am sure that these books were set in the time period when I was the same age growing up in a White only neighborhood. The differences are apparent and I learned so much more than I ever knew before reading them.
