  1. For several years, a friend of mine stayed at my house a few nights per week after she had bought a house in the country but was still commuting to Houston to work on weekdays. She paid me rent, and I thought it was a fair deal. But once, when her children had given her a $500 gift card to Sears for Xmas or birthday, she gave it to me so I could replace my broken dishwasher. I was bowled over.
