For Valour

MEDAL 7Generally people are only awarded medals for courage in battle, risking life and limb for the sake of their country and their comrades. But most acts of courage are not so dramatic—speaking up when you feel uncomfortable, taking action when it is easier to not to, caring for others when you are in great need of care for yourself.

For what act of courage might you deserve a medal?

  1. In our small UU fellowship we are generally of the same mind on most social issues or fellowship matters. However, there are times when I do not agree with what is perceived to be the majority sentiment. It takes courage to be the one or one of perhaps two voters who cast opposing votes. But that’s democracy, right?

  2. In his late 20’s, as he was working hard to build his career, my best friend discovered he has bipolar, by having a manic episode this fall. I was diagnosed with bipolar many years ago as a teenager. I can advise him as someone who has more experience with bipolar, but just as often, we’re just in it together, going through this on “the buddy system”. Sometimes he’s the only one who can make me want to stay alive. If that doesn’t warrant a medal, he at least deserves a fruit basket or something.
