Pieces of sea glass are a small treasure to put in one’s pocket, worn smooth by the ocean over time. But that lovely smooth glass gem started as a sharp and hazardous shard, a piece of something that shattered.
How has a painful broken shard in your life smoothed out and become beautiful over the course of time?
What an odd notion, that brightly colored eggs should be a symbol of a serious religious holiday about resurrection and ultimate triumph over death itself. And that’s without even getting into the whole Easter Bunny thing. But maybe this whole human story of life and death and life is just absurd enough that painted eggs and a bunny that lays chocolate eggs work just fine for symbols.
What symbol of new life makes sense to you?
It is a sad fact of life that sometimes things—from teapots to relationships—sometimes break so thoroughly that you simply have to figure out how to go on without them.
How have you learned to live with loss?
It seems peculiar that one would call a holiday “Good Friday” when it recognizes the torture and state-sanctioned murder of a religious leader. There’s not much good to find in crucifixion. And yet, Christianity rests on the understanding that there can be no Easter without Good Friday, no resurrection without death.
What loss has led you toward new life?
