We enter into formal agreements by signing our names. Just that very act of declaring ourselves, putting the symbol of our self on paper, declares that we are trustworthy and prepared to commit.
When has it been a big deal for you to sign your name?
We treasure dogs for their unconditional love and loyalty, but it sure is easier to build a cooperative relationship with our canine companions through the judicious use of food.
How have you improved a relationship through the use of positive reinforcement?
Usually we want to leave ourselves a way out—an escape route in case things don’t go as planned. But every now and again we commit ourselves entirely, all in and no backsides.
To whom or what have you committed yourself irrevocably?
A pinky swear, a handshake sealed in spit, even a blood oath—from childhood we know that some commitments are special, and deserve to be marked with a special ritual.
