Churches have traditionally had bell towers, and the ability to sound out those bells across the town. Similarly, in the Muslim tradition the call to prayer rings out across the entire community five times a day. Religion, it turns out, has been taking over the airwaves for a very long time.

When have you chosen loyalty to your country in a way that was at odds with your government?
The democratic process depends on discussion and debate, both listening and being heard. Unfortunately, it can often be the case that important voices are never heard, are not even in the room.

When declaring what others need to do to be right, how do you check for your own bias?
All of us have parts of us that—for better or for worse—we keep hidden in certain contexts. We might avoid discussing politics at work, or hide our religion from our aunt or our romantic relationships from our parents. We all have a human need to be seen, but sometimes the need to not be seen takes precedence.
What is a context in which you try not to be seen?
