A hot air balloon relies upon the fact that the heated air inside the balloon is less dense than the cold air outside of it. The balloon rises until that difference in density balances the weight of the envelope, basket, and passengers. The pilot of a balloon regulates the heat in their balloon and adjusts this balance to make the balloon rise and fall.
