The Manner of Giving

“The manner of giving is worth more than the gift.”
―Pierre Corneille

When has the way in which you were given a gift made it truly special?

  1. My husband, who is shy and quiet and gets nervous easily, had a teddy bear propose to me. He went to Build-A-Bear, and recorded a message on a sound box which was then sewn into the bear. The bear wore a tuxedo, and did his job with style.
Unfortunately, my siblings weren’t as impressed as I was. My husband has a very deep voice, and since he spoke slowly and deliberately, he sounded spooky to them. (He gets compared to Lurch from the Addams Family on a good day.) My sister (age 21) ran around chasing my brother (age 18) with the talking bear, while he protested “ugh, it’s creepy, stop!”

  2. The following story has caused me to laugh whenever I tell it! My Mom was a fine seamstress and sewed lots of my clothes when I was a teenager into college age. I, during that time, ice skated at a local rink; she asked me if I would like to have a special outfit to wear and we chose the fabric, the colors and the style. Before Christmas that year, she sewed and fitted it to me perfectly. then she said, “Now on Christmas morning, we’ll hang it by the tree and you should act VERY surprised in front of your Dad. I tried of course, but it was evident that I already knew of “the surprise”. Lots of laughing about that time.
