Black and White

We talk about seeing things in black and white as being rigid, closed to variation, unable to see nuance. But even within the narrow parameters of black and white there are unlimited possibilities.

When have limitations led you to a more creative outcome?

  1. My talents as a pianist are limited. Although I enjoy playing the piano, as one who studied years ago, I do not feel competent in playing the score as written. Earlier one of my teachers who did teach the rudimentary basis of classic piano realized that we young students wanted to play popular songs such as “Blueberry Hill’. She proceeded to add to our lessons teaching us guitar chords in various forms of the major chords so that we could use the melody accompanied with the chords. I had always hoped that I could contribute music in some way. I have had two unexpected opportunities: one, as a pianist in the bar in California where I worked as a summer time waitress and the other, as the accompanist for hymns and accompanying music for our small group at our UU fellowship where I now live.
