Unlike puppies or kittens, newborn foals are able to walk and interact with the world within minutes of their birth. The may be awkward and gangly, but they pretty much hit the ground running.

I have actually witnessed this exact event; the young foal in the field next to my apartment in Kansas was up and going right away and during the following days, would run alongside its mother around and around the field as it grew up. But that’s not the answer to the question! Today I am still trying to understand the cultural signals of a young Nigerian man who is boarding in my basement apartment; sometimes I try very hard to understand why he is doing something the way he does without embarrassing him or myself. I’m learning new things, sometimes without much grace.
