Standing in Mystery

avebury stone circle - pixabay cc0Just why Neolithic people built grand circles of standing stones, and what they did with them, remains shrouded in mystery. But we assume that they served religious and ritual purposes. Which is to say that they are a mystery designed to address the Mystery.

What rituals or places help you get in touch with Mystery?

  1. When my friend and I “walked” Hadrian’s Wall in northern England, on a sunny day along with other tourists (I remember specifically a group of excited young students also there), I imagined that I could hear the noises of the Roman troops walking and guarding that part of the island. Knowing facets of history is one thing; being at that place and letting one’s imagination play a strong part can bring to mind the actual events that other humans experienced there. It also made me think of the others who were not Roman, not invaders and how they must have felt and what their lives were like.
