If you live in a part of the world that turns monochrome at this time of the year, it becomes a spiritual discipline to look for spots of color and brightness, to find the places where life shines in the grey.
Where do you find spots of brightness?

I live in a land of beige sands in the Middle East. Nine months of the year are searing hot and life is mostly indoors. Yet now in December my land is full of color. The silage farm I live next to seems to grow especially green for the camels and goats it will feed. The night streets are lit up with tiny green, red, and white lights for the national day celebration that happens this month. All are beautiful and definitely colorful, but the most spiritual comfort comes from opening my windows to let the fresh air move through my home and gently blow the windchimes I hang in my kitchen. A treat for the senses that I can only enjoy in these cooler months of my desert land.
Sarah, so lovely to think of you enjoying this special season where you live. I’ll be thinking of you from the Midwest US….waiting for the first BIG snow!
This year, I have the opportunity to show off the bright holiday lights of our Midwestern community to a young Nigerian man who, having been born here 30 years ago and growing p back home in Nigeria, is relocating here. Although he is a devout Muslim and has opportunities to observe his beliefs at the small mosque here, he seems to be reveling in seeing the magnificent as well as the more modest lighting arrangements on the homes. We drive around at night looking for more…and more. There will be a community contest for patrons to choose their favorites and winners of course. He plans to vote for his favorite. After the seasonal changes from Summer green, russet Autumn and now Winter starkness he sees that the sparkle of this holiday time adds joy to all of us.
