Food Chain

Everything, you know,
everything, sooner or later
gets eaten. Little fish,
big fish, no difference—
the world’s mouth
is on you. Outside the personal,
it even has a certain glory.

When the mouse, in its last
short dash to the grain,

in the flash before
the crushing beak descends,
it is finally, luminously, airborne….

What is worth giving your life to feed?

  1. In extreme circumstances, I imagine that I would give up food so that a young child could survive. Since eating is such a crucial part of living, I, as one who never experienced lack of food, find it difficult to consider. However, knowing that the world goes ahead on the strength of those who come later, if I can conceive of the fact that I won’t be here forever I must realize that others will continue to make the world turn and turn with my hope for better universal understanding!
