Cracked Open

concerned egg - morguefile creative commonsIt’s hard to love—or even appreciate—the things that lead to radical transformation. Nobody wants to be whacked on the head and cracked open. And you know what? You don’t have to love it. You just probably can’t stop it.

What was the “spoon” that led to radical change in your life?

  1. The radical change happened almost 50 years ago in my life and continues unabated: joining the Peace Corps and working for two years in Arequipa, Peru, and living in one of the barriadas there. Not only did it cause me to change my profession when I returned but it has also provided me with the insight to understand what it is to live as a minority in a society since I lived among Peruvians at the bottom of the social scale. I welcome the knowledge I gained to be comfortable being the “other”, even within our society.
