Designed by Committee

CommitteeWorkCamels have been described as an animal designed by committee—an odd assortment of mismatched and rather unattractive parts. But camels are brilliantly adapted to their desert environment, from the humps that store water to the long eyelashes that keep sand out of their eyes. They might be designed by committee, but that committee did good work.

What have you accomplished working with others that you could never have done alone?

  1. Before my retirement I had the great opportunity to work with and advise librarians in public librarians in my state. This meant that I would be working with seasoned librarians and I wondered if I could measure up to being a leader of the group. I wasn’t actually the leader;
    I gratefully accepted their experience added to my own and in committees, large and small, we accomplished many good things to support better library services to the young people of the state. Hours of getting together, agreeing on the beginning as well as the finalization of book review sessions, author conferences with national authors and illustrators as speakers, puppetry workshops…all worked because of the spirit of cooperation and genuine friendliness and passion to get the jobs done was what made for an exciting sense of accomplishment on the part of all of us. It worked!
