Yield

InstructionsThe rules of who yields to whom can get pretty complicated. Buddhism suggests that we should just practice yielding in general, practicing non-attachment to having our way, so that we can accept life as it comes.

What are you learning to yield to?

  1. I’m learning to yield to the perspectives of people of color. My record with antiracism is sketchy at best, having stayed silent far too many times and failing to consistently educate myself about these issues – the latter heavily playing into the former as I either didn’t realize how racists these comments were or was too shocked/ill-prepared to respond appropriately. Now I’m learning how little I actually know about these things and how important it is to change that.

  2. I what to add my comments to those entered by Martin. I find myself in somewhat the same position although I know that I have grown in understanding during the years. As a Caucasian, I had little contact with Blacks until adulthood. The defining point was when I was in the Peace Corps in the 60s and established necessary close relationships during training and work in South America with the Blacks in our group. Even the experience of living for two years among Peruvians “of color” gave me a better understanding that there are differences in cultures along with the human similarities. I am struggling right now with the current flow of thoughts in the US about how Blacks and Caucasians react to each other in an emotion laden situation. Can we learn from each other what certain (perhaps) cultural actions represent to each other ?
