Beauty in the Ruins

BeautyInTheRuinsLife persists, even in the bombed-out rubble, after the hurricane, in the midst of betrayal or illness or loss. Always something manages to grow and thrive and bring a shocking beauty to the devastated scene.

  1. At the funeral of a dear friend recently, I turned out the babbling of the clergyman and opened my heart to the beautiful setting – a contemporary church with clear windows everywhere. Light poured into the sanctuary. A breeze stirred in the trees outside. Birds flitted around and sang lovely tunes. This is exactly where I could imagine the spirit of my friend, not inside the church but in the out-of-doors, possibly sailing on the nearby lake, laughing as he read the wind and tacked to his destination.
