Ordinary Angels

The angels in the Nativity story who call out to the shepherds are beings of glory from on high who must tell the shepherds to “Be not afraid.” But our day to day world is full of much less impressive angels, ordinary people or animals or places who somehow manage to be messengers of the divine, who through their words or actions or simply by their presence bring us “tidings of great joy,” even if the message is as simple as the fact that our coffee is ready.

Who appears as an angel to you, bringing a message of joy?

  1. My husband! We have been together for 17 years, married for 13. I was married before, and he wasn’t, and I love the fact that I’m the only person in the world he has ever called “wife.” So, when one of us comes in the door at the end of the day, he calls out, “Helloooooo, WIFE!” After all these years it still makes me smile and giggle. Every time. A tiny joy, to be sure, but it signals a big joy — having found a life partner who loves me just as I am, and who takes joy in bringing me joy.
