Beneath the Husk

Have you ever picked up a fallen chestnut or walnut, and peeled back the husk to find the nut beneath? Without experience you would never know that a glossy chestnut would hide under that prickly green skin, or that a walnut was lurking under the unattractive green and black husk.

What experience that seemed off-putting has yielded a pleasant surprise?

  1. When I’m very depressed and/or anxious, everything seems off-putting, but sometimes things turn out okay once I get going. Just this morning I did not want to face the cold and snow but had to go outside because my dogs needed their walk. Once I was walking, I started paying attention to the conversation with my family, to how interesting/beautiful the snow was, and to how cute my dogs were, and these things distracted my from my misery. I was happier during that walk I had so dreaded than I was before and afterward.

A little more than “off-putting” … the abuses I suffered as a child … staying open and vulnerable with that, while I heal, keeps me available to those who have similar wounds, and are seeking solace.
    Blessings!
