New Year’s Eve, although it may be raucous, is a bit of a pause in the cycle of the year, a deep breath as we look toward the horizon, wondering what the next wave will bring.
On the cusp of the New Year, are you riding the wave, under water, paddling in the shadows, swimming out to sea or headed toward shore?
There are definitely times when we are skating on thin ice, worried that the surface that holds us will crack. But at other points in life it is possible to relax into an assured sense that while we might stumble and fall, the ice beneath us is firm and reliable.
What gives you the sense of a stable surface underlying what you do?
Camels are beautifully adapted to their desert environment, from the humps that store water to the long eyelashes that protect their eyes from blowing sand. Which isn’t much help when it turns out that you are living in the snow.
How have you managed to adapt to an inhospitable environment?
There’s a saying that if everyone put their troubles in the center of the circle and got to choose which pile of troubles they would take back, each person would choose to take their own problems. But what if you could find something better to take in exchange?
What in your life do you wish you could swap out? What would you like to trade it for?
Some days we just can’t wait for the sun to shine and lift the gloominess of our clouded days. Some days we long for rain to come and water the parched earth or our withered souls. Only on very rare days do we get both the sun and the rain—everything that we might want or need, even if those needs seem to conflict. Those are the days of rainbows.
