So often, in daily life as much as great cases of national malfeasance, it is the cover up that will get you, rather than the crime. Admitting our mistakes and our failures, apologizing and setting a new course is so much harder—and more useful—than trying to make sure no one finds out how flawed we are.

Christian theology suggests that we live in a fallen world, in which original sin means that we are all sinners. Gravity declares that if you drop something it will fall, because that’s just the way things work.
