Lacking x-ray vision, mostly we don’t see beneath the surface to the armature inside, the bones of who we are. It takes imagination to get to what is under someone’s words—their needs and fears and dreams.

Mr. Rogers offered a Land of Make Believe, a neighborhood to go visit where you could be with your friends, and conflicts were resolved by talking things through. Maybe such communities aren’t entirely imaginary.
