This evening marks the beginning of the time of Hajj, the pilgrimage that Muslims are enjoined to take at least once in a lifetime. All places in this world are holy, but some, through tradition and association—and maybe even some innate spiritual power—are holier than others.
Where have you gone on pilgrimage?
Is a time out a punishment or a gift? Whether adults or children, sometimes taking a moment to just stop doing what we’re doing (especially if it isn’t working) is just what we need to set ourselves onto a better track.
How do you give yourself a time out?
The frogs will be singing their evening chorus regardless of anything you have to say. But there’s something very rewarding about a wide-eyed audience, so preach away.
What are you unable to resist saying, whether it makes a difference or not?
There are so many things in life that are painful to carry—from global warming to chronic illness to the world’s many injustices—and so few rules about how it can be done with grace. Breathe. Open your arms wide. Ask a friend for help.
What helps you to lift your greatest burdens?
Sure, no one has the right to tell you to smile if you don’t feel like it. But don’t think you have to hide your braces or your false teeth or your tooth gaps or your goofiness even when there isn’t really that much to smile about. It’s OK. We’re happy to see you grin.
