The Mexican/Mexican-American celebration of the Day of the Dead is truly that—a celebration. There are times to mourn and to cry over our losses, but El día de los muertos recognizes that there are also times to remember with joy, and even festivity, those who live on in us.

Linus, from the Peanuts cartoons of Charles Schultz, used to spend the evening of Halloween waiting in a pumpkin patch for the Great Pumpkin, who, sadly, never arrived. But if only he had let go of the unobtainable vision of the Great Pumpkin, Linus might have seen that he was surrounded by quite lovely (and pie-worthy) Lesser Pumpkins.

As the days grow shorter and winter draws closer, many beings are preparing themselves to sleep through the winter, living off what they have gathered in over the summer and the time of harvest.
What changes does the winter bring to the pattern and pace of your life? How do you prepare for that change?
The mourning dove is known for his plaintive song: Oo-wah-hooo, hoo-hoo. Maybe the dove himself is feeling perfectly cheerful, but there’s still something to be said for the feeling of release that comes from singing very sad songs at the top of your lungs.
What sad songs make you feel better when you sing them?
Perhaps owls have become a symbol of wisdom because they not only have large eyes, they can also swivel their head 360 degrees to see everything around them. There’s a lot to be said for the insight that comes from being able to see from all perspectives, and for keeping your eyes open wide.
