The haze of smog-choked skies is a far cry from the lovely soft mist of early morning. The pain of knowing the price of pollution, destroys what might otherwise be considered great beauty. What we know can hurt us, and what we refuse to know can hurt us much more deeply.
What are you both glad and sorry that you know?
When climate protesters in Paris were forbidden to gather because of security concerns following the Nov. 13th terrorist attacks, they set up thousands of pairs of shoes to stand in their place. In the face of terror, in the face ecological devastation, we go on by finding a way to understand that we walk in one another’s shoes.
How do you express solidarity in the face of the world’s brokenness?

When has love helped to heal your brokenness?
Water and wind erode rock, carving great canyons or etching patterns that will change over geologic time. There is no particular form for a rock, from massive granite cliff to pebble, that is more right or whole or correct than any other way.
How are you whole at this point in your life that is very different from the way you were whole when you were younger?
We often go off alone in our grief, seeking comfort in solitude. But sometimes, as with Freddie Gray’s mother, public mourning is an act of courage, of naming the fact that our personal pain is part of a larger fracture in civic life.
What do you feel deserves public mourning?
