Although great strides have been made in the fight for women’s equality since the struggle to win women the right to vote, there is still considerable work to be done. (And much work beyond that to achieve full gender equality across a spectrum that goes beyond the binary of male and female.)
Who inspires you by their work for gender justice?
As good people, kind people, people of faith, we learn to be cooperative and kind and understanding. But when systems are broken, a faithful response—a response based in understanding—might better be flat-out resistance and refusal to go along.
When have you chosen the good by refusing to cooperate?
A fallen, dead leaf, well past its usefulness. Cracked and rippled ice, a maze of flaws. In other words, a thing of beauty which looks as if it could be set as a piece of jewelry.
What has gained beauty for you because of its limitations or imperfections?
If you break a finger, the doctor may well use a cast or splint to bind that finger to the one next to it to stabilize the broken one as it heals. Sometimes we need someone to hold us steady until we are ready to be strong on our own.
When has someone supported you through a time of brokenness?
A broken cookie is just as delicious as one that is intact—and it even comes with an invitation to share.
What have you found added value in because of its flaws?
