The Book of Exodus describes the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments being carried before the Hebrew people in a gold-covered wooden box throughout their decades of wandering in the desert. It might not be convenient to haul around a heavy box full of stone, but there’s something to be said for letting your most sacred covenants lead you.

Perhaps the dignity of our lives and our passing is marked less by the trappings of white gloves and shiny cars than by the ways in which those whom our lives have touched gather around us to pay respect.
