Every Human Heart

“If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?”
―Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

What evil have you found in your own heart?

Keep Out

Boundaries of various sorts can be healthy, and even necessary. And yet, it is all too common for fear to build fences where bridges might serve us better.

What fence around your heart do you wish were not so high or so sharp?

Do Nothing

“The world is a dangerous place to live, not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don’t do anything about it.”
―Albert Einstein

What have you done recently to confront evil?

Original Sin

One interpretation of the story of Adam and Eve is that through their disobedience to God evil entered the world. Another interpretation of the same story is that their transgression describes how people came to have consciousness, conscience and the ability to make moral choices.

How would you explain the existence of evil in the world?

Things

“Evil begins when you begin to treat people as things.”
―Terry Pratchett

In what ways, however small, have you found yourself treating or thinking of someone as less than fully human?
