Ramshackle and precarious, or prime waterfront property? The answer, of course, is both. The humble and the grand don’t live at opposite poles, but rather as facets that can be side by side on the same diamond, however rough.

For many people the “holiday season” primarily means various ways of engaging with presents: shopping or making or searching online for just the right gifts, not to mention wrapping and mailing and hoping for gifts of your own. Sometimes the gifts we give and receive are tangible. Sometimes they are not.
