When have you gained an important insight by discovering what something was not?

You know your route. You have a plan, and a scheduled arrival. You have things to do and places to be. And then a road block appears, and all of a sudden the well-planned route is just not going to happen. Action movies are pretty much the only place where it actually works to just power through the barricades.
