A fallen, dead leaf, well past its usefulness. Cracked and rippled ice, a maze of flaws. In other words, a thing of beauty which looks as if it could be set as a piece of jewelry.
What has gained beauty for you because of its limitations or imperfections?
If you break a finger, the doctor may well use a cast or splint to bind that finger to the one next to it to stabilize the broken one as it heals. Sometimes we need someone to hold us steady until we are ready to be strong on our own.
When has someone supported you through a time of brokenness?
A broken cookie is just as delicious as one that is intact—and it even comes with an invitation to share.

What helps you to remember your successes in the midst of mistakes and failures?
Perhaps the most joyful act of wanton destruction in recent history came with the demolition of the Berlin Wall that divided communist East Berlin from democratic West Berlin. Sometimes things need to be broken to allow us to move in freedom.
