The original Pledge of Allegiance, written by Francis Bellamy in 1892, read “I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”
What do you pledge your allegiance to?

I pledge allegiance to the cause of liberty, justice and equality for all.
“What do you pledge your allegiance to?” I’ll just say that I should give my allegiance only to what I can confidently call “good.” That is not only hard, but I have. over the years, been sometimes wrong as to what I saw as good.
That said: John Keats wrote “A thing of beauty is a joy forever.” I still think that beauty itself is the most reliable indication of goodness. Our founding documents have a beauty to them that point to their goodness. We are not always right, but I firmly believe that this nation is fundamentally good.
