The Art of Living

Where in your life do you find yourself mingling letting go and holding on?

  1. My husband and I have been in the process of learning how to hold on and let go mindfully as we have reached the age of changing relationships with parents and children. First, when parents age and lose critical abilities for moving through an adult world, children step in to help. As abilities continue to diminish, there most likely will come a time when the child becomes a parent, and the parent becomes an ever more dependent child. In this case, we learned to let go of established roles and behaviors while balancing a bank of warm memories and cherished moments throughout our lives. It is most difficult to retain balance while continuing to provide love, safety and daily care, but with perseverance changes do happen gently (more or less).
At the same time, we find ourselves shifting our points of view and coping with changes in balances between parents and children as our children have attained adult status and have growing children of their own. Once again, old patterns die hard, but many of those established patterns must be altered or let go entirely. It takes patience, tenderness and toughness to make the necessary changes so that cherished memories continue to be made and relationships continue to be strong and resilient.
