Oooo, Shiny!

chrome-mercedes - picography creative commons“Oooo, shiny!” we say of those things that distract us from the task at hand. The world is so full of things that are trivial, but attractive—messages on Facebook, videos on YouTube, leftovers in the refrigerator—that draw us away from what we really mean to do.

What draws you back to what is most important to you, in the face of all distractions?

  1. I search for visual interest and beauty. My orientation to the world drives me to continually look for an interesting leaf, a craft item that shows the innovativeness of the maker, a photograph that catches the element of nature’s beauty or fascinating human expression. The ordinariness of daily life can pass by with its many necessities and other stimulations. I find myself thinking sometimes that I live outside of the ordinary world that is the usual for other people, My excuse for being as I am is that, using these experiences of finding beauty by myself, I can translate them to others for their own enjoyment.
