It’s often surprising that two people from different cultural backgrounds find the same thing funny. This has been happening recently to a young visitor from Nigeria and me. He comes from my acquaintanceship with his parents years ago when they were students at a local university. Recently he has taken a temporary job at a books shipping plant; I have driven him to the early morning shift. Passing by a statue of Thomas Jefferson in our city, we have both developed the custom of shouting “Hi, Tom!” almost at the same time, which produces hearty laughs between us. What fun it is to communicate across what appear sometimes to be artificial boundaries.
