Where the Wind Takes Us

The problem—and the joy—of a hot air balloon is that it has no means of steering. Once you’re up in that basket, you go wherever the wind takes you, whether you had expected to go there or not. Whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing depends entirely on your point of view.

What’s the most interesting place you have ended up without intending to go there?

  1. Being a single parent. I never could have imagined how challenging, yet fulfilling, being a single mom would be. My daughter is now 24 and she is the accomplishment of which I am most proud. She is a college graduate and is now employed doing work that she absolutely loves. I absolutely can’t take all of the credit. We had lots of help and definitely more than a little luck. As she became an adult, she also became my best friend. Sure, there are times when I still pull the “mom card” on her, but mostly we are friends. I am beyond blessed.

  2. I’m sure that your efforts were not in vain; your daughter’s accomplishments will be reflected in the lives of others.

  3. The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is held in October each year because that is when “the box effect” is likely to exist. Breezes flow in all directions at different altitudes. With so many balloons in the air, spot one going the direction you wish and ascend/descent to that altitude. Want to dip in the Rio Grande river? Follow other balloons to the water.
