Help

It can be hard to know when to offer assistance, but it can be harder still to know when it is time to ask for help.

When have you been glad that you dared to ask for help?

  1. Once I had a big flood. Water pipe broke in the attic during the night. House, especially my bedroom, bath and hall were uninhabitable–neither safe nor healthy till repairs could be made. I am glad I reached out and let my friends know what was going on. One of them brought be a sandwich and offered to let me stay with her, which I did the first two nights. But it was hard for me to find a comfortable place to work at her house. So another friend put me up through the weeks it took to get the house back to normal.

  2. I have asked several times for help when I thought it was the best route to follow. The one time hat I remember especially went something like this: I was in the downtown area, carrying a heavy costume dress over one arm and walking up a moderate cement incline when down I went! I could not decide whether I had been injured or not and there was no one walking near by. I continued lying there and calling loudly HELP…HELP…..HELP. No one came…no one noticed. Finally a man came strolling down the hill and said, “Do you need some help?” (I almost laughed at this!) However, with his help and then the help of some office workers right near where I was….all came to my rescue. I wasn’t hurt physically; my pride was hurt but following this, I accepted help from Joyce, a bank employee who knew me and walked with me to go along with me to my destination. All turned out OK ; I still think it was the right thing to do.
