Shopping for Gifts

Perhaps buying gifts for the holidays is one of your greatest joys. Perhaps it is one of your greatest nightmares. Either way, it can add a great deal of stress in terms of both time and money. Either way it feels best when your giving comes from the heart.

What are you excited to give this holiday season?

  1. My pleasure is not in giving gifts at Christmas. I don’t celebrate the holiday that way. I prefer to celebrate New Year 20….? Not only do I celebrate it in private, but I also like to share it with others during part of the NY Eve before. I do not see Christmas as the most important day to celebrate at this time of the year. Especially since it has become such a commercial thing, I prefer to offer my thanks to others at various times of the year.

  2. I’m excited to be providing gifts for a foster child. My church puts tags with names and wish lists on their big Christmas tree, and I chose an 11 year old boy who wants headphones and a Lego set. I’m excited to go shopping and pick out a really awesome Lego set for him.

My family does a Secret Santa pick, so we each only buy for one person, and we send lists of suggestions in an email chain. I bought everything for the recipients my spouse and I picked from the UU Service Committee shop The Good Buy: fair trade coffee, hand woven placemats from Guatemala, candles made by refugee women…good stuff. 🙂 I was happy to be able to benefit others with my purchases, instead of just going with regular capitalism.
