What Remains

Humans, sadly, are capable of stunning acts of destruction. Nature is capable of stunning acts of re-birth. So, for that matter, are humans.

Where do you see signs of re-birth around you?

  1. I see it in young adults. They are young enough to have gown up since schools began teaching about bullying, promoting kindness, requiring public service. I often see stories about teens inviting Downes kids to prom and even nominating them for Queen and King. I read about student athletic teams that put scoring the most points aside to let a handicapped student play and score, both teams cooperating to do this.
But young adults are old enough not to have been grown up with the worst of the bigotry promoted by the neo-con propaganda machine. I am thinking of young people I know well. Some think the propaganda is craziness. One says of news pundits, “They can say what they want; I have a brain of my own.” One has been influenced by going to a small, overtly conservative college to buy into “trickle down” economics, but only because her kind heart has been persuaded that reducing taxes on the rich will really help everyone, including the poor. I know that she is too kind not to eventually see another side of things now that she is away from that college. As she gains more life experience, her kind heart will prevail.

  2. Speaking of resilience, the topic of the month. I should first say that I’m a deist and I find no one at the fellowship I attend who will openly support that view. After a bad period of weeks of depression and anger and highly elevated blood pressure I went to Unity last Sunday. One member is named chaplain who will pray with anyone who needs it. I went to her and we prayed together. I was surprised as tears streamed down my face but I have been greatly restored by that experience.

    1. There are many ways to get to a place that feel like your own, Nicki. I’m glad you found yours.

  3. It seems to me that there is a repetition of desire for freedom among many nations of the world but still so often it gets overpowered. Even though I am an optimist, I see that there is the period of violence that is happening which means many people will lose their lives and sacred fortunes because of their part in the fight for freedom. I am optimistic that after the violence, there will be a time of reconciliation and it will be like flowing honey and it will sweeten all lives equally.
