The Art of Life

sustainable-cc0“I have received no assurance that anything we can do will eradicate suffering. I think the best results are obtained by people who work quietly away at limited objectives, such as the abolition of the slave trade, or prison reform, or factory acts, or tuberculosis, not by those who think they can achieve universal justice, or health, or peace. I think the art of life consists in tackling each immediate evil as well as we can.”
―C.S. Lewis

What immediate evil do you try to tackle?

  1. I try to tackle the evil of wastefulness, and try to conserve and re-use as much as I can. I can’t pretend that the world’s resources are limitless, so I tend to my little corner of the ecosystem.

I pack lunches in reusable containers (instead of sandwich baggies).
    I use handkerchiefs.
I carry water bottles which I fill up at home.
I use cloth pads and special absorbent panties for my periods (GladRags and Lunapads, and Thinx and DearKates, to name some resources) which I wash with my other laundry.
I wash clothes on cold to save energy, and full loads to conserve water.
I unplug chargers from the wall when not in use.
I donate clothes, books, and other items to charity so that they don’t go to waste, either in a landfill or just sitting around being of no use.
I always get toilet paper made from recycled material.
If I get a bottled beverage while out and about, I will bring the bottle home to recycle instead of throwing it away as trash.
I try to get my spouse to accept 60 degrees as the thermostat setting in winter, but compromise to 65. After I bake in winter, I leave the oven open (and off) to share the heat with the rest of the house.

  2. Maggie, you inspire me no end! I do the recommended recycling that my city offers, but so many of the other things you do on your own are admirable. Congrats to you! I will try to copy some of your efforts.

  3. Right now, seeing the LGBTQ community with such treats, I will, in a small way, assure my homosexual and lesbian friends of my caring and, I hope, an understanding that I am on their side. A personal letter to each is the form I will use. I also participate in rallies and protests at the state capital and visit legislators to give my message to them. I want to do more.
