Memorial Day

memorialWe take this day in the United States to honor all those who have given their lives in military service. May we additionally honor all the others who willingly walk into harm’s way to keep others safe and free, from fire fighters and police officers to whistle blowers and protesters against injustice.

Who do you honor for their willingness to risk themselves for the sake of others?

  1. Honor goes to all who sacrifice for others. During earlier days I was familiar with the custom of decorating sites where family members or other ones remembered were buried. The high point for many who live where peonies bloom at about this season would be to collect the blooms and distribute them on the graves many miles away from their homes. If the blooms were in jeopardy of blooming too soon, some would preserve them in the refrigerator so that the blooms were at their best. Since other nations often observe the gifts given to us by our parents and other personal ties, I think it is appropriate that our nation revive that custom. Not only the military but others in our lives protect and care for us.

  2. Harriet Tubman and the other conductors on the Underground Railroad come to mind. I really admire her.

Trans people who speak openly about their trans status to fight for the rights of all trans people also come to mind. It is not their responsibility to do so, and it can make them lose their jobs, friends, housing, and their very life. Still, they do it, and by doing so, they help make the world a better place.
