Throwing Sand

Sandy ChildAnyone who has been to the beach with a child knows that sand in the air equals sand in the hair. If you have been to the beach with a child, you probably also know that there is no point in trying to control where the sand goes. Might as well enjoy the mess, and enjoy the lingering sand as a memento of a lovely day.

What kind of mess do you enjoy?

  1. Two messes , no three, that I can remember with relative pleasure! (1) teaching papier mache to fifth graders; the messy torn paper and wheat paste combination was such fun and slapping the paper scraps on and smoothing the coolish wheat paste was soothing! (2) working with clay to produce hand built pieces; the clay takes on a life of its own and as the piece progresses, it becomes something special that until the end is presenting various possibilities of form, texture and ultimately glazed surface color and texture. (3) teaching finger painting to second graders showing them how to make designs with windshield wiper hands or side of hand flowers in slippery paint on smooth paper. These finished products make fine notebook pamphlet covers.
