The Courage to Stand Up

dog and horse“It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends.” ―J.K. Rowling

When have you had the courage to stand up to a friend or family member?

  1. Standing up to a friend or a family member ? Not very often. I don’t have much confidence in risking what I see as the possible loss of a friend or disapproval of a family member. Sometimes I’ve used the technique of writing and sending a letter regarding my opinion and a possible solution to a difference of position. Maybe this is because I was an only child and never had to defend myself with siblings.

  2. I believe it takes more courage, and certainly more caution, to stand up to a friend or loved one. You might win over an enemy, or at least improve the situation in some way, but you have little or nothing to lose. The enemy may still be an enemy. But with someone close, there is a great deal to lose, and you run the risk of making an enemy, although I wish that Rowling had used a less severe term than enemy. Not all who disagree with our own views are necessarily “enemies,” which implies so much more. Perhaps adversary or opponent would be better.
