Snug in Their Beds

SoundAsleepFor a precious moment, all is still. The children are finally asleep. Everything that needs to be assembled has taken on its proper form, and the mysterious extra screw is put away. Santa has, mysteriously, come and gone, along with a cookie and a carrot for the reindeer. Sleep in heavenly peace.

Do you have any special rituals for Christmas Eve?

  1. Like most Germans, my family’s main celebration takes place on Christmas Eve. It’s not an official holiday, unlike the 25th and 26th. However, it is the day we exchange gifts. While many decorations have graced our walls since the start of Advent, the tree and the tablecloth have waited for this day. On Christmas Eve, my family also starts eating all the cookies we baked during Advent.

  2. I celebrate December 24 without much reference to its title or meaning. I prefer to be away from the mandatory celebratory mood of it and like to travel to some place where it is not glorified. This year I spent the holiday week in Chicago in a tour group program seeing the sites and sounds of urban life. The guides of our group were from the Jewish Community Center so although we went to places to see lights, etc., the emphasis was not upon Christmas.
