The Holly King

HollyandIvyIn the Celtic tradition the winter solstice brings an end to the reign of the Holly King, and the ascendency of his brother the Oak King. While this time of the longest night marks the beginning of winter, it also marks the gradual lengthening of the days.

What is coming to ascendancy in your life?

  1. My grasp of the German language is ascending. I’ve been reading books in German regularly for quite some time now. I’m going to get tutoring twice a week starting in February and have a few exercises to get ready before then. I’ve been meaning to listen to more German podcasts, but keep forgetting. It takes many years to master a language, and no matter how much you know, there’s always more to learn. Still, I’ve been making progress and will probably get much better once the tutoring becomes regular.

  2. I see from his comment that Martin is introducing something new to learn into his life. I too am doing that. I have the opportunity to learn to play a recorder. A group is slowly forming of beginners and experienced players and I will have to persist in making myself practice so that I can continue to be part of the group. It a challenge.

    1. I hope you enjoy playing the recorder. It’s a wonderful, under-appreciated instrument. I started playing it more seriously in 2012 (I think), but that ended about a year ago due to hand problems. I will have surgery soon, and I hope that I’ll be able to pick it up again after I heal – though that will probably take at least a few months.
