Preparing to Hibernate

BlackBearAs the days grow shorter and winter draws closer, many beings are preparing themselves to sleep through the winter, living off what they have gathered in over the summer and the time of harvest.

What changes does the winter bring to the pattern and pace of your life? How do you prepare for that change?

  1. Preparing for a new season always alters my thinking and planning for something new. I’ve lived where there are no seasonal changes as here in a temperate climate. I anticipate these changes because I think it keeps all of us more alert and challenged. Winter plans for me seem to include thoughts about how to adapt to staying-in or going-out, especially when listed for appointments. I now consider at-home projects and ways I can adjust appointments; in fact last year during snowed-in times, I called friends to help me with obtaining medicines; two both helped so I now have years’ worth of aspirin on hand!

  2. I live in a small town of 6,000 in Arizona that swells by half in the winter when the snowbirds come to roost. Nowadays rodeo contestants also turn up here to practice and compete. All our annual events take place in the winter and I used to take part in them: the home tours, the rodeos, the concerts, air shows, exhibitions, parades, BBQ competitions. I do still make note of most of them, but no longer feel like attending.
