Palm Sunday

PalmSundayOn Palm Sunday the crowds welcomed Jesus into Jerusalem with a hero’s welcome. Only a few days later a crowd called for his violent death. Neither crowd imagined for a moment that more than 2000 years later one of the world’s great religions would center on the events of that week.

What helps you to see possibilities far outside of the obvious?

  1. What happens next? What might happen next? How will these things affect the lives of those I love, those I don’t yet know, other nations and other worlds? These are questions that don’t get asked as often as they should. Why did no one consider how spraying insecticides to rid farmers of destructive pests that ate up parts of crops might bring about the destruction of honey bees around the world, thus setting up a potential of no crops at all? How does the lust for short term gains lead to the rampant spread of world wide poverty. How does popular reaction to hate-mongering sound bites have the potential for changing governments and societies in ways that we don’t really want? What would happen if before people reacted for short term gain or approval, they asked those questions and determined if the answers made the quick choice as glamorous or self-satisfying? How many of the people in the crowds in Jerusalem were carried away with the tide of negative emotion at the moment without any understanding of the long range consequences of their complicity?
